What is ADHD

  • Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (AD/HD or ADHD or ADD) is a type of developmental disorder. A child with ADHD would display a persistent pattern of impulsiveness and inattention, very often with elements of hyperactivity.  Some of the symptoms displayed by children with ADHD include failure to pay attention to details, repeated careless mistakes in schoolwork or other activities, trouble in sustaining attention during work or play, difficulty in following through on instructions and finishing of tasks etc.

Causes of ADHD

  • The causes of ADHD are not clearly established. However, differences have been noticed  in the chemistry of brain transmitters in those with ADHD.
  •  A genetic predisposition is also noticed in some cases .
  •  Sometimes, certain environmental factors may contribute to or worsen a child’s behavior.

Management of ADHD

  • Treatment and management of ADHD includes both medication under supervision involving stimulants meant for stimulating areas of the brain which help in focus and attention, and anti depressants  where required.
  • Patients are also encouraged to take part in behavioral therapy. Behaviour associated with ADHD can often become habits and therapy will help a child to change this by putting forward a model correct behavior for them and working with them to gain impulse control.
  • In some cases relief from ADHD is found by making dietary changes.
